Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation

Bernie is an experienced psychotherapist, trainer and life coach who maintains a full-time practice. She has a B.Sc. in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Middlesex University) and a Dip. in Suicide Studies (Console), she also has an M.Sc. in Bereavement Studies (R.C.S.I.) with further training in ‘Complicated Grief Therapy’ through the Irish Hospice Foundation.

Bernie is also fully qualified in clinical supervision.  She is an accredited psychotherapist and supervisor with the Irish Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (I.A.C.P.).

Bernie is committed to ongoing professional development and completed a H. Dip. in Adult and Further Education (Maynooth University).

Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest

Having worked in the funeral industry for twelve years, Bernie has a particular interest in the area of bereavement counselling and complicated grief – dealing with clients experiencing loss, grief and bereavement, divorce and separation, depression, anxiety and panic attacks, childhood trauma, bullying, stress, loneliness and many other challenges that life throws at us.

Her experience, as a therapist in Pieta House, provided her with a competence in working with many varied, difficult and complex issues with clients from different cultures and diverse backgrounds dealing with issues resulting in self-harm and suicidal ideation. Bernie also facilitates workshops, for professionals, the prison services and the public, on Self-harm and Suicidal Ideation (Prevention, Intervention, Postvention) and Bereavement.

In addition, she has a particular interest in working with people who have experienced coercive control and narcissistic abuse within their personal relationships.

Bernie is currently working with couples using the Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) model.

Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach

Bernie likes to learn about people and from people in a non-judgemental but real and empathetic way – she uses an integrative approach to therapy including Cognitive Behavoural Therapy (CBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), adopting the style that best suits an individual’s needs. She is passionate about people making changes in their own lives and living the life they truly want to live in the present moment.
