Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation
Derek holds a number of qualifications including a BA in Psychology; National University of Ireland, Galway and Diploma in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy; PCI College
Derek is a fully accredited member of The Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and as such, strictly adheres to their Professional Code of Ethics and Practice. He continually updates his skills through courses, workshops and regular supervision.
Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach
Derek is an integrative therapist with particular focus on Humanistic and Person Centred approaches to Therapy while also including Psychodynamic, CBT, Choice / Reality Therapy and Mindfulness.
Derek’s approach to therapy is based in the belief that each individual has within them the potential for healthy development and growth, where each of us is the expert in our own lives.
Therefore his approach is as flexible as possible in responding to his clients’ needs. The client is always at the center of the process. Through a collaborative, open and honest relationship in therapy, the client has the opportunity for personal growth and positive change.
Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest
Derek has worked as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist in a number of organisations and in private practice since 2013.
Derek has worked with a wide range of issues including (but not limited to) anxiety, bereavement, depression, caring for family members with dementia , self-esteem, panic attacks, relationship issues, supporting carers of children with special needs and long term illness, stress management, insomnia, loss, bereavement and personal development.
Derek believes that developing self-awareness and greater understanding can facilitate growth, uncover strengths and lead to a more fulfilling future.
As a parent Derek understands the challenges parenthood can bring and has a particular interest in the areas helping families of children with special needs.
