Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation
Karen Fitzsimons graduated from the Tivoli Institute in Dun Laoghaire in 2002 and has subsequently been awarded a B.Sc. (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy from PCI College and Middlesex University in 2008. Karen also holds a post-graduate Diploma in Gestalt Therapy, Integrative Bodywork, Embodied Psychotherapy Practice, Cross Professional Supervision and Community Addiction Studies.
Karen has trained as a couple’s therapist with Accord. She has also completed further training in the area Post-Suicide Intervention, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, ASSIST training, Counselling/Therapy for Sexual Addictions, Trauma Based Therapy and the Sacred Art of Living and Dying.
Karen is a registered Eating Freely Therapist. She is an accredited psychotherapist and supervisor with the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP) and the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). Karen is also an accredited psychotherapist with The European Association for Psychotherapy.
Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach
Karen believes that psychotherapy offers individuals an opportunity within a safe and contained space to initiate a process towards well-being. In time this can lead to the person moving through and beyond the psychological, emotional, and physical impacts that impinge on their day to day living.
In her practice, Karen uses a humanistic and integrative approach which incorporates Gestalt Therapy and Psychodynamic approaches and Body Work; working closely with clients to understand their specific individual needs.
Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest
As well as being in private practice as a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor Karen held the position of group facilitator and tutor with ICPPD Athlone for a number of years. Previous roles include working as an individual/group therapist with One in Four.
Karen has extensive experience in working with individuals, couples and group facilitation.
